What is sharp, where it stops, and how many frames a stack needs.
Depth of field is one formula that nobody wants to do at the tripod. This does it, and the two things the phone apps leave out: the diffraction limit for your sensor, and the focus-stack count for macro.
WHAT IT DOES
- Near limit, far limit, total depth, in front and behind, for any sensor, lens, aperture and distance
- Hyperfocal distance, and the near limit when you focus there
- Diffraction: the aperture where the Airy disk outgrows the circle of confusion, and the smaller one where it shows at the pixel level for your pixel pitch
- Full-frame equivalent focal length and aperture for crop sensors
- Aperture table f/1.4 to f/22 at your distance
- Focus stacking: near and far point of the subject, aperture and overlap in; frames needed, rail step and the focus distance of every frame out
- Portrait framing solver: pick headshot, head and shoulders, half, three-quarter or full length; it gives the distance to stand at for your lens and sensor, and the sharp zone there
- Background blur: the defocus disc a background light makes, as a percent of frame height and in pixels, for every aperture, with a plain verdict from sharp to creamy, and advice on subject-to-background distance
- Portrait warnings when the depth is thinner than a face
Sensors built in
Full frame, APS-C (Canon and Nikon/Sony/Fuji), Micro Four Thirds, medium format 44×33, 1-inch, smartphone.
Who it's for
Landscape shooters using hyperfocal, portrait shooters deciding between f/1.4 and f/2, and macro shooters who need to know if the stack is 8 frames or 80 before the light moves.

Depth of Field & Focus Stacking Calculator
hyperfocal, near and far limits, diffraction, frames for a stack
Sensor, lens, aperture and distance in. Near and far limits, hyperfocal, the diffraction limit, a portrait framing solver (how far to stand for a headshot or full length, and the sharp zone there), background blur disc size in pixels by aperture, and the frame count for a macro focus stack.
